The Virginia Peninsula Community College men’s soccer team opened the 2024 season with a 4-0 loss at Frederick Community College (Md.) on Aug. 24, but coach Kevin Darcy saw some good things.
“I was encouraged with our ability to compete and create chances throughout the game, but disappointed in the final score,” he said.
The Gators, preparing for their first season as a member of the NJCAA Region 10 after spending last year in the New South Athletic Conference, started strong and had some chances early. However, the hosts opened the scoring in the 25th minute off a corner kick.
Griffin Croke had a good look for the Gators late in the first half, but his shot was just wide.
In the second half, Jordan Richardson and Dieumerci Anania created chances on counterattacks but couldn’t score. The Cougars added to their lead in the 61st minute and then 10 minutes later for a 3-0 advantage before Richardson drew a penalty. Frederick’s keeper preserved the shutout with a save, and the Cougars closed out the scoring with a goal with about 15 minutes to go.
“A couple of their goals were preventable, and we obviously have to convert PKs and one-one-one chances when they present themselves,” Darcy said. “We gained a lot from our opening game but are definitely not satisfied with our play over the full 90 minutes or the final score.”
This week, the Gators have a pair of home games: Tuesday, Aug. 27 against Mid-Atlantic Christian University at Kiln Creek Park at 7:30 p.m., and Friday, Aug. 30, against Bluefield University at Wanner Stadium in James City County at 6 p.m.
